Comments: The 60-ton sloop William and Barbara (Martin) was en route from Sanlúcar de Barrameda, Spain to Perth, Scotland when she was captured by Massachusetts Navy Brig Freedom (Captain John Clouston) some forty-five to forty-eight miles south of the Scilly Isles on 15 April 1777. The skipper and all hands, except one, were removed and a prize crew put aboard. The crew was not allowed to remove their personal property from the sloop. On 17 April a Dutch vessel was stopped and Martin and his crew, with the prisoners from two other prizes, were put aboard her. She carried them to Amsterdam. William and Barbara was ordered into Marblehead, Massachusetts. On 27 or 29 May 1777 the sloop was recaptured by HM Sloop Albany (Captain Joseph Hains), sailing from New York to Halifax. She was sent into Halifax by the Albany, where she was tried and condemned on 18 June 1777.
