Comments: HM Frigate Winchelsea (Captain Nathaniel Bateman) was patrolling around French Key, Bahama Islands on 19 May 1777. At 2000 she sighted, chased and stopped a sloop bound to South Carolina from Cap François, Sainte-Domingue. A petty officer and three men went aboard. She was the sloop James, with a cargo of salt. James was sent into Jamaica, British West Indies.
