Comments: HM Frigate Niger (Captain Robert Lambert) was patrolling 12-15 miles NW Point Isabella, Santo Domingo on the morning of 28 March 1778. At 0500 Niger saw a sail off shore and sent HM Sloop Badger’s tender in chase. Niger’s barge went out after the sail in addition. The barge closed up with the chase and a brief fight followed before the prize surrendered. She was the sloop Washington, from either North Carolina or South Carolina, bound to Cap François, with tobacco, staves and beeswax. She was brought down to Niger at 1200 where her captain and five crew members were removed. Niger began stowing her cargo in preparation to converting Washington into a tender. She was eventually sent to Jamaica, British West Indies.
