Comments: HM Frigate Apollo (Captain Philemon Pownoll) was fifteen miles south southeast of the southern end of Nantucket Shoal on the morning of 10 March 1778. At 0800 she saw a sail to the west and chased her down at 1000. The prize was the schooner Polly (Benjamin Cox), bound from Wignaw, South Carolina to Salem, Massachusetts with a cargo of rice, indigo, and deerskins. Polly was owned by Henry Williams & Co. A petty officer and some sailors went aboard as a prize crew. In the following night the Polly parted from the Apollo. Polly went into Newport, Rhode Island and then into New York, New York. She was libelled at New York on 15 April 1778 and condemned on 8 May 1778.
