Comments: The schooner Joseph (Abraham Tappan) was bound from some port in New England for Edenton, North Carolina in ballast. She was apparently sailing in company with schooner Bedford (Thomas Maxwell), also from New England. Apparently, both schooners were to load at Edenton and proceed to Spain with cargoes of tobacco. Off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, both schooners fell in with the British Privateer Brig Loyal Subject (Andrew Syme), which had sailed from New York, New York on 6 March 1778. Both schooners were captured by the Loyal Subject, along with other prizes, and were escorted to New York, arriving on 16 March.
