Comments: On 10 June 1777 Captain Andrew Snape Hamond, commanding the British naval forces in the Delaware River, ordered Lieutenant John Knight, commander of HM Armed Sloop Haerlem, to proceed to New York with dispatches for Vice Admiral Richard Lord Howe. Hamond had received news that several American vessels were in Egg Harbor, New Jersey, and directed Knight to raid that harbor if possible. He was ordered to take HM Brig Tender Stanley (Lieutenant Richard Whitworth; Roebuck) and tender Hotham (Hele) with him. In the harbor was brig or brigantine Nancy (Montgomery), owned by Shelcrop & Co. Nancy was a privateer out on a cruise but coming from St. Eustatius, Netherlands West Indies. She had a small cargo of damaged salt aboard. Knight and his vessels arrived off Egg Harbor on 12 June. Two vessels were cut out of the harbor, the Nancy and brig or brigantine Ann (Christopher Bradley), which were escorted in to New York on 15 June. The High Court of Admiralty records describe Ann as an American merchant vessel. Two other vessels also were captured on this short cruise, the schooner Apollo (William Forsyth) and the sloop Industry (John Hutchins).
