Comments: On 25 June HM Frigate Valiant (Captain John Leveson Gower) was patrolling 120 miles southwest of Ushant. About 1200 she sighted and chased a brig to the northwest. The wind died and then became intermittent, but, at 2000 Valiant was close enough to fire at the brig. She was found to be the brigantine Elizabeth, bound from Charleston, South Carolina to Nantes, France, with rice, tobacco, and indigo. An officer took charge of the Elizabeth. The prize was sent int England, arriving before 5 July 1777.
