Comments: The 160-ton Belle Savage (Elijah Steele) sailed from Charleston, South Carolina on 22 April 1777 in company with a ship, two brigs, and an armed sloop (South Carolina Privateer Sloop Active), bound for Nantes, France. Belle Savage had a cargo of rice, indigo, deerskins, tobacco aboard, valued at £2000 at Charleston. She was captured by HMS Monarch (Captain Joshua Rowley) on 4 June 1777, at 46°43'N, 246 miles WSW of Île de Ouessant, France, and escorted into Portsmouth on 16 June 1777. Her cargo was valued at £2000 at Charleston. Belle Savage was tried and condemned in the High Court of Admiralty in 1777.
