Comments: HM Frigate Valiant (Captain John Leveson Gower), was patrolling forty-five miles northeast of Cape Ortegal, Spain, on 2 July 1777. At 0800 she sighted and chased a sail to windward. At 1630 she fired at the chase and brought her to. The prize was the ship Three Friends (Robert Cook), bound from Charleston, South Carolina to Nantes, France, with a cargo of rice, indigo and tobacco. She was sent into England where she was condemned as a recapture, formerly being the Maria, captured by the Americans.
