Comments: HM Frigate Valiant (Captain John Leveson Gower), was patrolling 111 miles northeast of Cape Ortegal, Spain, on 7 July 1777. At 0500 she sighted and chased a sail to the northeast. At 1400 she fired at the chase and ran her down at 1530. The prize was the brig Blair (Charles Periam), bound from Charleston, South Carolina to Nantes, France. She was tried and condemned in the High Court of Admiralty.
