Comments: Sloop Linkhorn (James Mitchell) was bound from Newburyport, Massachusetts to Surinam, Netherlands South America with a cargo of fish and lumber. Linkhorn was owned by Samuel Knowell. On 22 January 1778 Linkhorn was some ninety miles southwest of Cape Sable, Nova Scotia when she was sighted at 1500 by HM Frigate Apollo (Captain Philemon Pownoll). At 1700 Apollo ran her down and sent a mate and four men aboard as a prize crew. The American crew was removed to the Apollo. Linkhorn and Apollo lay to for the night. At 0800 the prize crew informed Pownoll that the prize was very leaky and Apollo took her in tow. After removing several articles from the sloop, she was set on fire at 1600 and destroyed.
