Comments: HM Frigate Apollo (Captain Philemon Pownoll) was on patrol on the morning of 17 January 1778, about seventy-five miles southwest of the southern part of St. George’s Bank. At 0700 she sighted and chased a sail and ran down the prize at 0800: the sloop Friendship (Thomas Harmon). Friendship, owned by Wells & Co., was bound from Casco Bay, Massachusetts [Maine] to Guadeloupe in the French West Indies with a cargo of lumber. The sloop was stripped of her sails, water, and provisions and then burned.
