Comments: The 50-ton sloop Adventure (William Ricker) was bound from Carolina or Virginia to Martinique, French West Indies, with a cargo of tobacco. On the morning of 6 January 1778 she was some three hundred miles to the northwest of St. Martins, Netherlands West Indies when she was sighted, at 0600, by HM Sloop Grasshopper (Commander William Truscott). Truscott saw her in the northeast, steering to the southwest. After an all day chase Grasshopper ran her down at 1600, firing two shots to stop the sloop. She was sent into Antigua, British West Indies.
