Comments: The 120-ton brigantine Triton (James Tiletson [John Chandler]) was owned in Newburyport, Massachusetts. She sailed from Boston, Massachusetts on 13 December 1776, bound for Bilbao, Spain with a cargo of fish, oil, candles, beeswax and furs. On 7 January 1777 she was at 43°52'N, 33 miles NW of Cape Ortegal, Portugal, when she fell in with HM Frigate Thetis (Captain Mitchell Graham). Triton was captured and taken in to Plymouth, England, arriving with the Thetis on 19 January. She was tried and condemned in the High Court of Admiralty in 1777. An officer aboard the Triton, John Chandler, escaped from prison and arrived at Dunkerque, France in March 1778.
[NDAR, VIII, 536; XI, 1057 and note [where it is inferred that John Chandler was skipper of the Triton]; HCA 32/464/6/1-17]
