Comments: Schooner Friendship (Daniel Rhodes) was inbound from Môle Saint-Nicolas, Saint Domingue in January 1777 with a cargo of molasses and sugar, heading for Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. On 1 January Friendship was off Cape May, New Jersey, as was HM Frigate Roebuck (Captain Andrew Snape Hamond). The big frigate sighted the schooner at 1300 in squally, rainy weather and chased. At 1900 several shots brought the Friendship to a stop. She was sent to New York under escort of HM Sloop Falcon and delivered to an anchorage at Sandy Hook, New Jersey on 9 January 1777. Friendship was tried and condemned in the New York Vice Admiralty court in 1777.
