Comments: The 60-ton sloop Adventure (Thomas Newell [Nevell, Nowell]) was bound from St. Thomas, Danish West Indies to Charleston, South Carolina with a cargo of wine, dry goods and other items. On 25 January 1777 Adventure was approaching Charleston Harbor in company with a schooner. The pair were sighted at 0700 and chased by HM Frigate Perseus (Captain George Keith Elphinstone). Both vessels were inshore of the Perseus. Adventure tacked repeatedly, followed by Perseus. Elphinstone fired many 9-pounders and swivel guns at the sloop and schooner. Finally the Adventure bore down to the Perseus and surrendered. She was found to be owned in St. Thomas. Adventure had a crew of seven men aboard. She was sent into Antigua, British West Indies, where she was identified as a re-captured vessel. She was waiting for trial at Antigua on 9 March 1777, described as a “Qualified Dane.” Other sources indicate she was condemned as a re-capture on 3 March.
