Comments: Brig Greyhound (Walter [William] Stephens [Stevens]) was sailing on account of the Secret Committee of the Continental Congress. She sailed from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with a cargo of flour, pork, fish, staves, brick, and bar-iron. Among those aboard was a black woman, perhaps part of the crew. Greyhound was captured by HM Frigate Argo (Captain William Garnier) on 13 January 1776, off St. Christopher’s at 1200. Argo sent her gunner, a mate, and six men aboard, and sent Greyhound in to St. John’s, Antigua. She was tried and condemned there on 2 February 1776 (or on 12 March 1776), along with the slave. By 15 February 1776 it was known in Philadelphia that she had been captured. Argo’s crew received prize money for the Greyhound on 23 April 1776.
