This was the brig America (Jonathan Lambert), from Surinam with a cargo of molasses. America was out of Salem, Massachusetts, and had been reported as captured in the Pennsylvania newspapers with the date of capture before 17 January 1776. Later the Virginia newspapers reported her capture, with the date of capture before 29 March 1776. America was tried and condemned at Antigua on 12 March 1776.
