Comments: The 100-ton British Privateer Sloop Active (J. Powell) was built in Bermuda in 1773. She was armed with ten 4-pounders and two 6-pounders and was owned in Liverpool, England by N. Ashton. Active had formerly been owned in Charleston, South Carolina and had been taken into Liverpool, England by her crew in the summer of 1777. Active sailed from Liverpool to New York in the late summer of 1777, and sailed from New York on a cruise in December 1777. Active cruised off the South Carolina coast. Between January and March 1778 she captured three brigs, two schooners and a sloop. Five were sent into Antigua, British West Indies and one to St. Augustine, East Florida. Some, but not all, of the masters and crews were sent ashore. These men reported that Powell gave them kind treatment.
