Comments: Sloop Unity was bound from Guadeloupe, French West Indies to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with a cargo of rum. She was sailing with another American ship in company. On 2 April 1777, at 0500, the pair were sighted by HM Frigate Glasgow (Captain Thomas Pasley), near Desecheo Island, Puerto Rico, Spanish West Indies. Pasley chased the Unity, being certain she was an American vessel. About 1000 the wind fell off and Pasley wasn’t sure he could catch the American, but his tender appeared to leeward and cut her off. An officer and some men went aboard, and she was sent into Jamaica, British West Indies. She was owned in Guadeloupe.
