Comments: The brig Timoleon (Joseph Blaid) was bound from Bordeaux, France with a cargo of lead, gunpowder and bale goods. On 12 April 1777 HM Frigates Greyhound (Captain Archibald Dickson) and Diamond (Captain Charles Feilding) were forty-eight miles southeast of Cape Ann, on the southern part of Massachusetts Bay. At 0400 they sighted a sail to the northeast and made sail. At 0500 Greyhound started firing at the chase. It took eleven 9-pounders to bring her to heave to at 0530. She was the Timoleon. The British discovered that Timoleon had an all French crew with an American pilot aboard. At 0700 Diamond came down and joined her consort. In the afternoon Greyhound sent a mate and a midshipman on the prize and Diamond furnished six men to make up the prize crew. Twelve prisoners were removed to the Greyhound, six of which were sent to the Diamond. At 1900 the prize parted company.
