Comments: The schooner Sally was bound from St. Lucia, French West Indies to Salem, Massachusetts. On 21 April 1777 she was 132 miles northeast of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. At 0800 HM Frigate Scarborough (Captain Henry Mowat) sighted a sail to the northeast, about nine miles away, and chased. The weather turned to light winds with thick fog. At 1330 Scarborough sent her cutters away after the schooner. At 1700 the boats returned, having taken the Sally. A midshipman and five men went aboard to take her in to Halifax, Nova Scotia. Perhaps from the prize, Mowat learned of a French schooner in the area. Sally was sent away and Scarborough sailed to the northwest looking for the French vessel.
