Comments: The sloop Betsy was bound from South Carolina for Boston, Massachusetts with a cargo of rice, tar and indigo. She was about 165 miles southwest of Mount Desert Island, Massachusetts [Maine] on 28 April 1777. At 0700 she was sighted by HM Frigate Scarborough (Captain Henry Mowat) who began chasing. At 1300 Mowat fired two 9-pounders and four swivels at the Betsey, which surrendered. A midshipman and four men went aboard as a prize crew. In Admiral Howe’s prize list she is credited to HM Frigates Diamond and Greyhound.
