Comments: Diana was one of two sloops (the other was Abigail) captured in Newport Harbor by HM Frigate Rose (Captain Wallace). The two sloops were carrying together 300 barrels of flour for the American army. John Brown, owner of the sloops, a prominent Providence merchant, and the agent for purchasing the flour, was aboard one of the sloops. An officer and ten men were put aboard the Diana. The cargoes of both vessels were put into the Abigail and she was sent round to Boston with owner John Brown aboard the next day. The crew was released at the time of Diana's capture, but Wallace put a crew aboard the Diana and retained her as an armed tender. (see Abigail).
