Comments: Massachusetts Privateer Schooner True American (Commander Daniel Hathorne) was probably in European waters by October 1776. About this time Hathorne took the 100 or 120-ton brigantine Unity (Shubael Worth [North]) while she was en route from Lisbon, Portugal to Ireland. After being detained in Europe for a time, the prize was sent into Salem, Massachusetts. Unity was libeled on 13 February 1777, with her trial set for 25 February. She was advertised for sale on 27 February, with the auction to take place on 5 March 1777. Unity was noted as being two or three years old. One of Unity’s passengers, Mary O’Brien, petitioned the Massachusetts Council for permission to return home on the Lord Lifford (a ship purchased by former prisoners planning to return to England) on 10 February 1777. The council readily agreed.
