Comments: The 30-ton sloop Speedwell (Simon Noble) was captured by the Massachusetts Privateer Schooner Dolphin (Commander John Leech) about October 1776, and sent into Salem, Massachusetts. She was libeled in the Maritime Court of the Middle District on 28 November 1776 and tried on 17 December 1776. This is likely to be the same sloop Speedwell that was at Salem, Massachusetts on 30 December, when she was advertised for sale. She was said to be formerly the property of Henry Lloyd of Boston, and commonly was called the York-Packet. Speedwell was said to have a high deck, beams below and good sails and was “well known, and needs no Recommendation.” The auction was to be held on 7 January 1777.
