Comments: On 17 October 1776 the Rhode Island Privateer Sloop Greenwich (Commander Job Pierce) was at 35°N, 56°W, where she encountered the 150-ton brig Phoenix (John Darrell). Phoenix was bound from Quebec, Quebec to Grenada in the British West Indies with a cargo of fish and empty ship casks, and had sailed about the middle of September 1776. The prize was owned in Bermuda by Benjamin Lightbourn, Edward Parker, Daniel Atwood, Joseph Hinson and Darrell. The cargo was owned by merchants in Montreal, Quebec. Phoenix was sent into Providence, Rhode Island, and arrived before 1 November 1776. She was libeled on 7 November, and the libel was published on 9 November, with trial to be held on 25 November.
