Comments: Schooner Nancy was captured by the Maryland Navy Ship Defence (Captain James Cook) about October 1776. She was at Baltimore in late November 1776. Cook had among his prisoners, a young man who was the mate of the Nancy, and who wished to enter American service as the mate of a trading vessel. When Agent Jesse Hollingsworth approached Cook about this, Cook wouldn’t release the man until further orders were received. On 30 November 1776 Hollingsworth wrote to the Maryland Council of Safety on this matter. The master of the Nancy was a prisoner at Baltimore on 8 December 1776. When Nancy was considered to be purchased by the state the master informed Cook that Nancy was well found and a good vessel. Part of her cargo of rum was bought by the state. On 11 December Hollingsworth notified the Council of Safety that he would purchase the schooner when she came up for sale.
