Comments: The Massachusetts Navy Sloop Republic (Captain John Foster Williams) was at sea in October 1776. In that month she captured the 400-ton ship Julius Caesar (Azariah Uzuld), bound from London, England to Halifax, Nova Scotia. Her cargo of woolens, linens, pork, beef, vinegar, flour and numerous other items and was estimated to be worth £11000. Julius Caesar had a crew of twenty-five or twenty-six men and mounted ten guns, and some swivel guns. She was escorted into Boston, Massachusetts on 3 November 1776 by the Republic. Julius Caesar was libeled in the Maritime Court of the Middle District on 28 November and tried on 17 December 1776.

On 5 November the Massachusetts Council ordered Williams to discharge such prisoners as were willing to enter aboard any armed vessel of the United States. Any prisoners not willing to do so were to remain on the Republic. On 12 November, Richard Derby, was directed to supply the Massachusetts House of Representatives with a box of stationery from the Julius Caesar, charging the state full price for it.

Meanwhile the government of Massachusetts bought out the crew’s share of the prize money, after negotiations, for £10000, on 19 November.

Uzuld was paroled to go to Halifax on 18 February 1777. He was to obtain the release of a prisoner there, in exchange for himself.
