Comments: Massachusetts Privateer Schooner True American (Commander Daniel Hathorne) captured the 120-ton brigantine Sally (John Bishop), which was libeled on 7 November 1776, and tried on 22 November 1776. The 180-ton brigantine Amy (Benjamin Burton), and the 100-ton brigantine Providence Success (John Fletcher) were also captured. Amy was bound from Newfoundland to Alicant, Portugal with a cargo of fish. Amy arrived at Marblehead on 8 November. Both were libeled on 28 November 1776, and tried on 17 December. The three masters, Bishop, Burton, and Fletcher, were on a list of British prisoners at Salem on 23 December 1776. Amy, described as “a very burthensome vessel extremely well calculated for the Lumber Trade,” and said to be 180 tons and six years old, was advertised for sale on 23 December, with the sale to be held on 31 December.

[The Independent Chronicle and the Universal Advertiser [Boston], Thursday, November 7, 1776; NDAR, VII, 104-105 and 105 note, where the note identifies the vessel as the Anna, which may mean the Amy. NDAR, VII, 139-141 and 141 note, contains the same paragraph, but the note identifies the prize as the Providence Success], 560-561, 567-568; The Independent Chronice and the Universal Advertiser [Boston], Thursday, November 28, 1776; New-Lloyd’s List [London], February 25, 1777]
