Comments: Rhode Island Privateer Sloop Snow Bird (Commander Israel Ambrose) was at sea in November 1776, perhaps returning from the Bahamas. Snow Bird captured the 60-ton sloop Swallow (Edward Moffat), en route to Senegal from the Mississippi, with a cargo of lumber, pitch and tar. Swallow was sent into Providence, Rhode Island, where she was libeled on 28 November 1776 and tried on 16 December 1776. Moffat, along with five free blacks, were among those listed as prisoners sent to Newport, Rhode Island, for exchange on 1 February 1777, in the cartel sloop Nancy.
