Comments: The 140-ton ship Rio Pongo (Walter Cherry) was probably a Guinea vessel, in other words a slaving vessel. She was bound from Jamaica, British West Indies to Liverpool, England, with a cargo of ivory, camphor wood and small arms. Rio Pongo was captured by Massachusetts Privateer Schooner Eagle (Commander Barzilla Smith) in November 1776. She was sent into Providence, Rhode Island. Rio Pongo was libeled on 7 December 1776, and tried and condemned on 21 December 1776. She was advertised for sale on 11 January 1777, along with her cargo. The sale was to be held on 15 January.
