Comments: The 120-brigantine Charming Sally (Richard Pickering) was captured about November 1776 by the Massachusetts Navy Brig Freedom (Captain John Clouston). Charming Sally had a cargo of oats aboard and was bound to the British army and fleet at New York, New York. She was sent into Massachusetts, arriving at Marblehead on 21 November. She was libeled in the Maritime Court of the Middle District on 28 November 1776, and tried on 17 December 1776. On 13 December 1776 the Massachusetts Council ordered the agent for the middle district to have the brigantine appraised, and the cargo landed and stored. They were then to turn the hull over to the Board of War. If the Charming Sally was not condemned at her trial, the owners were to be paid the appraised value. Charming Sally was thus added to the trading fleet of the Board of War. On 27 December her name was changed to Penet.
