Comments: This vessel was one of five vessels with provisions that the townspeople of Newport “recaptured” from the British. They had been detained on 16 June 1775 by HM Frigate Rose and HM Sloop Swan in Newport Harbor. After the two British vessels sailed on the morning of 17 June (withdrawing their prize crews) the townspeople boarded the vessels and brought them to the wharves, where they were unloaded and “dismantled.” Captain Wallace of the Rose claimed the owners had agreed to ship provisions to the British.
