Comments: Massachusetts Privateer Brigantine Civil Usage (Commander Andrew Giddings) was at sea in mid July 1777. On 24 July, at 47°56'N, 9°30'W, Civil Usage attacked and captured the 180-ton brigantine or brig Phillips [Phillip, Philip] (Alexander Crockett [Crocket]), from Naples or Castleamer to London with a cargo of staves. Philip was sent to Massachusetts where she was libeled on 4 December 1777 and tried on 23 December. Giddings told Crockett he had been out three months and had taken three prizes.
