Comments: Massachusetts Privateer Ship American Tartar (Commander John Grimes), about 15 July 1777, captured the ship (or brig) Janet, owned in Irvine, with a cargo of deals and calf skins. She was captured off the Shetland Islands, inward bound from Norway. Her crew was removed and detained aboard the American Tartar, as were some 800 calf skins. Janet was kept in company with the raider for the time being. Grimes now had fifty-five prisoners aboard the American Tartar. He put most of them, including the skipper and crew of the Royal Bounty, aboard the Janet and released her as a cartel vessel. Janet arrived at Banff, Scotland on 8 August 1777.
