Comments: The 50-ton sloop Bachelor (John Staples) was en route to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with a very mixed cargo of various kinds of provisions. Staples had a small crew of three men aboard. Bachelor entered the Delaware River and was laying off Marcus Hook on 13 January 1778. A party of the 4th Continental Artillery, consisting of eight men commanded by Captain Joseph Rice, went out and captured the sloop.
