Comments: [British Transport] Snow James (William Littledale), 180 tons, was en route to Boston, Massachusetts from Whitehaven, Scotland with a cargo of coal, oatmeal and porter, when she was captured by Massachusetts Privateer Brig Yankee Hero (Commander Thomas Thomas). James had a long passage, having sailed sixteen weeks earlier. She was sent into Newburyport, arriving before 20 February 1776, where she was libeled on 26 February 1776 and tried on 21 March 1776. Littledale, on 18 March 1776, requested permission from the Massachusetts Council to leave for England with his crew. The request was not approved and Littledale withdrew it on 23 March. He did obtain permission to leave with other released captains, but was drowned soon after in an accident.
