Comments: Sloop Grampus (John Brakett or Bracket) sailed from Baltimore, Maryland with a cargo of bread and flour, bound for Barnstable, Massachusetts. On 15 February 1776 she fell in with HM Schooner Tryal off Race Point. The master, mate, and all hands (except one) were removed from the Grampus and a midshipman and three sailors took their place. The sloop was ordered into Boston. On the morning of 16 February the inexperienced midshipman steered Grampus on to the Cohassett Rocks. The prize crew abandoned ship. The local inhabitants went aboard the Grampus, removed the cargo, and got her off the rocks. They rounded up the prize crew and forwarded them to Army headquarters.
