Comments: Continental Navy Schooner Wasp (Lieutenant John Baldwin) was patrolling off the Delaware Capes in December 1776. Baldwin recaptured a French schooner, captured exiting the Delaware Capes by a British warship. He was escorting her into Egg Harbor, New Jersey, on 18 December when a fleet of fifteen sail came in sight, including two two deck ships and two frigates. An armed brigantine pursued Wasp so closely that Baldwin left the prize and scooted into the inlet “fast as he cou’d.”
