Comments: Connecticut Privateer Sloops Beaver (Commander William Havens) and Hancock (Commander Elisha Hinman) were off Sandy Hook, New Jersey about mid April 1779. There they took the sloop Speedwell (Wilson), owned in New Haven, Connecticut. Speedwell sailed from New London for the West Indies on 17 April. She was captured by the British Privateer St. George, and afterwards re-captured by Hancock and Beaver.
