Comments: Connecticut Privateer Sloops Beaver (Commander William Havens) and Hancock (Commander Elisha Hinman) were off Sandy Hook, New Jersey about mid April 1779. There they captured a sloop, the Despatch, bound from Saint-Domingue, French West Indies with a cargo of rum and sugar. Despatch had been captured by a British vessel and was re-captured by the Hancock and Beaver. The schooner Marlborough, bound from Bermuda to New York with a cargo of lumber, was also captured off Sandy Hook. Both prizes arrived at New London, Connecticut on 22 April. She had also been captured off Sandy Hook. On Friday, 23 April, another prize arrived at New London: a schooner in ballast bound from Newburyport, Massachusetts to Virginia. The schooner had been captured by the British and re-captured by the two privateers.
