Comments:
Massachusetts Privateer Brigantine Weasel (Weazle) was first commissioned on 27 March 1781 under Commander John Coombs of Newburyport, Massachusetts. She was reported armed four guns and with a crew of twelve men.1 Weasel was bonded for $20,000 by her three owners, William Bartlet, John Coombs, and William Coombs.2
Weasel made at least one voyage under Coombs, to the West Indies. She sailed for home from St. Eustatius in the Netherlands West Indies about 21 May 1781 and arrived at Newburyport, Massachusetts on 4 June 1781.3
Her second commission was required by a change of commanders, to William Peirce Johnson of Newburyport. It was obtained on 23 August 1781. The battery remained at four guns, but the crew was increased to fifteen men. The $20,000 bond was executed by Johnson, Bartlet and William Coombs.4
