Massachusetts Privateer Schooner Volunteer was commissioned on 18 July 1782 under Commander Litchfield Luce, of Boston, Massachusetts, also her principal owner. She is listed as having eight guns and a crew of twenty men. Volunteer was bonded for $20,000 by Luce and Thomas Russell and Chambers Russell, both of Boston.1
