Massachusetts Privateer Schooner Viper was first commissioned on 23 July 1782 under Commander Benjamin Hilton of Salem, Massachusetts. She was listed as having two guns and twenty-five men in her crew. Viper was bonded for $20,000 by Hilton, Samuel Williams and Henty Williams, both of Salem. She was re-commissioned on 30 September 1782 with Thomas Coburn of Salem as her commander. Her battery was raised to eight guns but the crew remained the same. Viper was bonded for $20,000 by Coburn, owner Williams, and Robert Stone of Salem.1
