Comments:
Pennsylvania Privateer Schooner Vengeance was commissioned on 12 November 1779 under Commander Samuel Cassan, of Philadelphia. Cassan was a former First Lieutenant in the Pennsylvania Navy. Vengeance had originally been intended for former Pennsylvania Navy Captain James Montgomery, but he declined. She was listed as having six guns and twenty men in her crew. Vengeance was bonded for $10,000 by John Pringle.1
Vengeance was used in trading voyages to the West Indies. The first one was to Saint Domingue in the French West Indies. She returned to Philadelphia between 10 January 1780 and 18 March 1780 from Port au Prince with a cargo of sugar, coffee and other items.2
With a new master, William Allen, Vengeance made a second voyage to the West Indies. Vengeance may not have had a privateer commission for this second voyage. She returned from St. Eustatius, Netherlands West Indies to Philadelphia, between 28 November and 30 December 1780, with a cargo of dry goods, tin, and salt.3
