Pennsylvania Privateer Ship Van Tromp was commissioned on 12 January 1782 under Commander Robert Shewell,1 or Shepwell,2 of Philadelphia.3 Shewell had previously commanded the Pennsylvania Privateer Brig Fayette.4 Daniel Campbell of Philadelphia,5 another experienced officer,6 served as First Mate (Lieutenant). She was listed as being armed with ten guns and having a crew of forty-five men. She was bonded for $20,000 by Shewell and the other two owners.7
