Comments:
Connecticut Privateer Brigantine Van Tromp (or Van Trumpe; Van Trump) was commissioned on 1 June 1780 under Commander Sanford Thompson, of Middletown, Connecticut. She was listed as being armed with twelve guns and having a crew of fifty-five men. She was bonded for $20,000 by Thompson, Comfort Sage of Middletown and James Church of Hartford. Van Tromp was owned by Uriah Rogers & Co.1
Although Thompson commanded the Connecticut Privateer Schooner Weasel from October 1781,2 he evidently returned to the Van Tromp later. Van Tromp is recorded as arriving in the Connecticut River on 25 October 1782, inward bound from Havana, Cuba.3
