Massachusetts Privateer Brigantine Thorn was commissioned on 22 October 1778 under Commander John Coombs of Newburyport, Massachusetts. She was listed as being armed with fourteen guns and as having a crew of thirty men. Her $5000 Continental and £4000 Massachusetts bonds were signed by Coombs and by Ebenezer Parsons and William Coombs, both of Newburyport.1


Thorn was re-commissioned on 20 August 1779 under Commander Moses Hale of Newburyport. She was now listed as having six guns and a crew of twelve men. Her new $5000 Continental and £4000 Massachusetts bonds were signed by Hale, Parsons and Ebenezer Lane of Newburyport.2


Thorn was again commissioned on 7 December 1779 under Commander William Russell of Newburyport, Massachusetts. She was listed as having a battery of six guns and a crew of fifteen men. Her $10000 Continental and £4000 Massachusetts bonds were signed by Russell and by Daniel Sargent and Ebenezer Parsons of Newburyport.3
