The 130-ton Maryland Privateer Brig Otho was commissioned on 6 July 1781 under Commander John Martin, perhaps of Baltimore, Maryland. She was listed as having a battery of twelve guns and as having a crew of thirty-five men. Her owners are listed as Samuel Smith, Wallace Johnson and Muir of Maryland.1 Her $20000 bond was signed by Martin and by John Muir of Annapolis, Maryland.2
Otho sailed for the West Indies not too long after her commission. On 3 December 1781 Martin sailed from St. Croix in the Danish West Indies, and arrived at Annapolis on 27 December.3
